L. Willard Ortlip died peacefully at his home at the age of 97. He was “born in Hell’s Kitchen” in New York City on May 5, 1916, the 3rd of 7 children to his parents, H. Willard Ortlip and Aimee Eschner Ortlip, both accomplished artists. Mr. Ortlip worked for Alcoa for almost 45 years as a lab technician, and contributed to the developing field of industrial hygiene. An artist in his own right, he enjoyed using his hands to create beauty wherever he lived, including fishponds, decks, stonewalls, gardens, and in-home renovations. Throughout his life he participated in leadership at his church as an elder, deacon, Steven ministry leader, and choir member. Most recently, he was a member of Hampton Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Boughton Ortlip (1916-2009), his son, L. Willard Ortlip Jr. (1941-1977), and 5 siblings. He is survived by his brother Stephen J. Ortlip, his son Timothy B. Ortlip, his daughters Deborah S. Ortlip and Priscilla R. Ortlip; and by his grandchildren Joel J. Ortlip, T. Jason Ortlip, Lisa A. Ortlip, and L. William Ortlip.
The family is asking everyone to join them at a memorial service that is planned for February 8, 2014, at 10:30 AM, with a luncheon to follow at 11:30 AM, at Hampton Presbyterian Church (2942 East Hardies Road, Gibsonia, PA 15044). In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hampton Presbyterian Church in his memory.
