Sarah B. Haddad, 81, of New Kensington, PA, died at 12:30 PM Thursday, April 30, 2015 in Good Samarian Hospice at Concordia Lutheran Ministries, Cabot, PA.
Sarah was born on September 1, 1933 in New Kensington, PA to the late Chahoud and Jamily Haddad. Sarah graduated from New Kensington High School in 1951 and subsequently from Westminster College. She went on to receive Masters Degrees from Ohio University and the University of Pittsburgh in Education and Administration.
Sarah worked in higher education all her life, retiring from Penn State after 28 years as Director of Academic Counseling at McKeesport Campus. One of her highlights was working at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon for 1 year in the early 60’s. She was able to travel to her parents’ home town of Amar-el, Syria. She was deeply committed to her roots supporting many causes in Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine. She was a fighter for human rights.
Sarah lived a life of learning, traveling, tennis, and spending time with her family. She traveled from Glacier Bay, Alaska to Acadia National Park in Maine. She rode hot air balloons in Arizona and took whale watching trips in the Atlantic. Her favorite spot was vacationing in Ogunquit, Maine with her sister, Mary, niece, Lisa, and her family. Sarah would also go to Woodlock Pines in the Poconos to be with her brothers and their families every summer. She also traveled with friends to places all over the world and enjoyed the Elderhostel Education Programs, especially in Chautauqua, New York. Sarah belonged to an investment club called Show Me the Money. She was a lifelong member of the United Presbyterian Church of New Kensington. She was an elder whose particular interest was in finances, scholarships, and the church grounds.
Survivors include two brothers: Sam (Connie) Haddad and Jim (Carol) Haddad; one sister: Mary Howrelook; 7 nieces and nephews; and 14 great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother: Charlie Haddad, and a nephew: John Howrelook.
Family and friends are invited from 4-8 on Sunday, May 3, to the CHURCHFIELD-PETERS FUNERAL HOME, 501 Fifth Avenue, New Kensington, PA 15068 (724-335-1951). A service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 4 at the United Presbyterian Church, 601 Fifth Avenue, New Kensington, PA 15068 with her nephew, the Reverend Paul E. Roberts, officiating. (Everyone is asked to meet at the church). A private burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell, PA at a later date.
