Richard E. Butler, 89, of Oil City, PA, formerly of New Kensington, PA, died on Sunday, December 28, 2014 at the Oakwood Heights Presbyterian Home, Oil City.
Richard was born on April 15, 1925 in New Kensington, PA to the late Merle W. and Rhoda Mae Barker Butler. Richard was a graduate of New Kensington High School class of 1943. He enlisted in the US Army in 1943 and served during World War II in Europe with the 30th Infantry Division in the 531st (AAA) BN, earning 5 Battle Stars. He also served active duty during the Korean War. He worked as a spectroscopist for ALCOA for a total of 37 years. He worked at the Research Lab in New Kensington, and at the Technical Center in Merwin, PA, before retiring in 1983. Richard was a life member of the VFW Post 92, Lower Burrell, where he served as a former member of the Honor Guard, and a member of the American Legion, Post 868, Lower Burrell. He was also a member of the Alcoa 25 Year Club and Retirees. Richard had many hobbies including painting, writing poems, astronomy, camping and beer can collecting. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan. He also enjoyed recording old movies, doing crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, playing bingo and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his children: Dennis W. (Cheryl) Butler of Oil City, PA, Richard W. (Cari Ann) Butler of New Kensington, PA, Tammy M. (Paul) Butera of New Kensington, PA and Russell E. (Meigan) Butler of Virginia; 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 63 years: Jane Elizabeth (Wilson) Butler (March 2, 2014) and a brother: Donald U. Butler.
Family and friends are invited from 6-8:30 PM on Thursday, January 15 at the CHURCHFIELD-PETERS FUNERAL HOME, 501 Fifth Avenue, New Kensington, PA 15068 (724-335-1951), where a memorial service will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM by the Lower Burrell VFW. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell with full military honors accorded by the Lower Burrell VFW and the Tarentum VFW Honor Guard.
