Nancy Moore Obituary

Nancy R. (Dunn) Moore, 93, of New Kensington, died Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at St. Margaret Hospital in Aspinwall. Her death marked the end of an era. Nancy was born on Monday, Sept. 14, 1931, in her beloved Parnassus Borough, a daughter of the late Thomas Albert “Al” Dunn and Edith (McCracken) Dunn. That same year, Parnassus merged into one municipality with New Kensington. She was a lifetime member of Logan’s Ferry Presbyterian Church. She attended the former Parnassus High School three years before it merged with “Ken High”, from where she graduated in 1949. She had been a cheerleader and inherited a passion for sports from her father, who served as a longtime coach and athletic director for the district. She remained active with the “49ers” reunion committee through the 50th year gathering. Nancy attended the University of Miami, Fla., in 1950, where she was active with the Beta Nu Chapter. Not long after, she began her career at the Gulf Research and Development Center in Harmar Township. In her younger years, Nancy was an avid skier and trained in Europe. She loved traveling, and trekked to Fort Myers, Fla., annually. She loved all things Disney, from movies to collectibles and relished trips to Walt Disney World in Florida. Nancy enjoyed watching all sports – from figure skating to professional golf -- and loyally rooted for the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins. She called the 2025 Masters Tournament the most dramatic finish she has ever witnessed. Everyone knew to never call on Nancy between 2 and 3 p.m. weekdays, when “General Hospital” aired. Her brain remained remarkably sharp, as she followed the local and national news, read The Valley News Dispatch front-to-back, and completing crossword and jumble puzzles every day without fail.  Nancy was an exceptional listener and when she provided advice, it was always dignified and measured, but brutally honest. She formed and maintained relationships with cousins and friends, who became extended family. Owning strong Scotch-Irish heritage, she lived by the motto, “Chin up!” People admired her meticulous nature, and dignified yet salt-of-the-earth persona.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Megan Moore in 2015; and several aunts and uncles with whom she was close. Survivors include the aforementioned cousins and friends; several living across the country in nearly a dozen states. She will be missed.

There will be no public viewing or service per her request. A private burial will be on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at Parnassus Cemetery. Arrangements by the Churchfield-Peters Funeral Home, 501 Fifth Avenue, New Kensington, Director John Peters.
