Mr. LaVerne G. 'Red' Rummellof Natrona Heights, PALaVerne G. 'Red' Rummell, 83, of Natrona Heights, PA, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Good Samaritan Hospice, Cabot.Red was born on September 15, 1929 to the late Harry Rummell and Mabel Forrester Rummell Nelson. He was a graduate of Har-Brack High School class of 1948. He was a machinist by trade and retired from Allegheny Ludlum's #9 Machine Shop in 1990. He was a jack "of-all trades; Red designed and built his family home in Natrona Heights. He and his wife were long time members of the Grace United Methodist Church, Harrison Township and the Clarion Campers and the Tarentum MORA club. Red loved to travel: he and his wife, Mary Ann, visited 45 states over the years. Red loved spending time with his family; he enjoyed going on family vacations and watching his granddaughters cheer, play soccer and dance. Red was very excited about the recent addition of two great-grandsons to the family. His favorite pastimes were golf, playing the piano, bowling, reading and watching the Pirates or Steelers. Red was a WW II history buff and somewhat of an expert on the European Theater. He is survived by his wife of 64 years: Mary Ann Szafranski Rummell; 2 daughters: Linda (Gary) Schaefers of Freeport, PA and Sharon Leonardi of Sarver, PA; 2 grandchildren: Jessica (James) Campana and Jacqueline Schaefers; and great grandsons: Anthony and Troy Campana; also serveral nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved step-father: Allen Nelson; a sister: Virginia McGinn Shume and a son-in-law: John Leonardi. Family and friends are invited from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Tuesday, March 26, at the ROBERT PETERS FUNERAL HOME, INC. 1521 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights, PA 15065 (724-224-7730). Services will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at the Grace United Methodist Church, 1333 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights, PA 15065, with the Reverend Justin Judy, officiating (EVERYONE IS ASKED TO MEET AT THE CHURCH). Private burial will follow at Mount Airy Cemetery, Natrona Heights, PA. The MORA club will meet at 4 PM on Tuesday in the funeral home.
