Donald O. SprowlsFormerly of Upper Burrell Township, PADonald O. "Don" "Dink" Sprowls, 90, of Murrysville, formerly of Upper Burrell Township, PA. Died on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Redstone Highlands, Murrysville. Don was born on Tuesday, September 9, 1919 in Arnold, PA, to the late William Otte and Mary Olive Plants Sprowls. He graduated from New Ken High School Class of 1936 and from Drexel University in Philadelphia Class of 1943 with a BS Degree in Chemical Engineering, but he was a life long learner. He was a Metallurgist for Alcoa of New Kensington, retiring in 1983 after 43 years of service. He was a former member of the United Presbyterian Church of New Kensington and a member of the Newlonsburg United Presbyterian Church of Murrysville where he was very active at both churches. His community involvements included the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, Lions Club, Upper Burrell Planning Commission and Meals on Wheels. His love of the outdoors and photography was a lifelong passion. He is survived by his children: W. Alfred (Darlene Farkas) Sprowls of Salem, SC, James D. (Marcy) Sprowls of Sayre, PA, Janet M. (Richard) Thom of Jamestown, NY and Elaine (Joseph, Jr.) Spana of Poplar Grove, IL. 16 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife: Barbara E. Grunewald Sprowls on October 1, 2001 and 3 brothers: Robert V., Christopher R. and Thomas G. Sprowls. At the request of the family there will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be announced at a date in late spring. Burial will be private.
